Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

It is proclaimed that the Lord is “a crown of glory” to His despised remnant. He is not like the paltry crowns of fallen petals, worthless trinkets at a drunkard’s feast, but “a crown of glory” that does not fade (Isaiah 28:5). And who is this crown of glory? It is the Lord of hosts, the God of armies.

In Psalm 24 there is a glorious description of this King of glory, and of how He is honoured by all the heavenly heirs and glorified spirits before the throne. There they cry, so that the vaults of heaven ring with it: “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in!” Then the question is asked: “Who is this King of glory?” The answer is: “The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in!” Again the question is asked: “Who is this King of glory?” And again the answer comes: “The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory” (Psalm 24).

He crowns you with lovingkindness, grace and forgiveness, and you crown Him with praise. If you had a thousand crowns, you would joyfully set them all on His blessed head, as He so richly deserves; and if you had a thousand tongues, they would all proclaim His praise.

Reading: Isaiah 28

To the reader…

Do you count yourself among the despised remnant, small and of no account in the eyes of the world? Then let the crowns of this world wither, like fallen petals at a drunkard’s feast. The Lord of hosts Himself will be your crown of glory, a crown that does not fade.

He crowns you with lovingkindness, grace and forgiveness; what else can you do but crown Him with praise? Are you poor in words, and is your heart often cold? Then look to Him, the King of glory, strong and mighty. All your crowns, all your tongues and all your love are not worthy to rest upon His head; and yet He graciously accepts the praise of a poor heart. Lift up your head, then, for He is worthy.
