Christus’ zitten ter rechterhand Gods

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and He is the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 2:1-2

We are apt to lose sight of the intercession of the Lord Jesus Christ as our great High Priest, and to forget too that we have such a Friend above. We firmly believe these truths, we are anchored in them, and we have no other hope than what is bound up with them and flows from them. But there are times of darkness and distress: when the guilt of repeated backsliding lies heavy on the conscience, when the mist of unbelief gathers over the foundations of our hope, when our evidences are clouded and we see our tokens but dimly. Then we need a living Advocate, Who can plead our cause, because we cannot plead it ourselves. He presents for us His blood and obedience, His sufferings, sacrifice and death, and so He makes us more than conquerors over every accusation and every adversary.

Satan stood at the right hand of Joshua the high priest to resist him (Zech. 3:1). The accuser of the brethren accused them before our God day and night (Rev. 12:10). Neither Joshua nor the brethren could bring forward one word in their own defence, and yet both came forth as conquerors through the help of the Lord and the blood of the Lamb. So poor, guilty sinners now overcome through the power of their heavenly Advocate. Because, then, we feel the weight and burden of sin, but also see by faith that our great High Priest has entered within the veil, our eyes, hands and hearts all go out to Him.

When this is thus realised by faith, there is a peculiar power in this believing look to our heavenly Advocate, which draws out desires and supplications from the soul towards Him. Yea, in this living and daily communion with Jesus in heaven lie the life and power of godliness.

Reading: Zechariah 3

To the reader…

Perhaps the guilt of repeated backsliding now lies heavy on your conscience. The mist of unbelief hangs over your hope, your evidences are clouded, and when the accuser charges you, you cannot find a single word to say in your own defence. Do not be surprised at this; it went the same way with the saints before you. They too stood with their mouths shut.

Yet they came forth as conquerors, not by their own plea, but by the blood of the Lamb. You have, dear reader, a living Advocate, Who has entered within the veil and Who pleads your cause now that you cannot plead it yourself. Let your eyes, hands and heart go out to Him. In that daily, living communion with Him in heaven lie the life and power of godliness, even for a soul that can no longer speak a word of comfort to itself.
