Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

Endurance, too, is needed. That is the chief thing required of the runner when the race is very long. He can win the prize only if, besides being swift of foot, he has great bodily endurance and above all determination, so that he does not give up or faint, but holds out to the very last. This calls for all his strength. For a race is not won by lightness of foot and agility alone, but by bodily endurance, sound lungs and muscles, and above all by great courage and by a firm resolve not to be beaten.

So it is also with running the heavenly race. It must be run with much patient endurance. It is not won by first going swiftly forward and then falling headlong, breathless and exhausted, or by having to leave the contest because one can go no further. The heavenly contest is not like a race in the field, a ten-minute sprint, but a race for life; a race that is ever renewed and never ends until the incorruptible crown is won. It calls for all the strength of grace, and can be won only when every spiritual faculty is put forth with all patience and without ceasing.

We soon see this when we look at the hindrances and difficulties which the runner meets at almost every step. Look how worn out we ourselves are when we have run a long while; see our doubting, uncertain hearts, our weak faith, our scanty hope and our wavering love. Everything without us and everything within us cries out for rest and for stopping. Always watching, always praying, always reading and hearing; always resisting sin and the devil; denying self and crucifying the flesh; always being tempted, tried and exercised; always undergoing some affliction in body or mind, in family or circumstances; plagued all the day long and chastened every morning – what patient endurance is needed for all these daily experiences! Herein all fall short but the children of God.

Reading: Psalm 33:8-22

To the reader…

These words call us to run with patience. Have you grown weary on the way? Everything without you and everything within you cries out for rest and for stopping. Always watching, always praying, always resisting sin and the devil; plagued all the day long and chastened every morning. You look at your doubting heart, your weak faith, your scanty hope and your wavering love, and you wonder how you will ever hold out to the end.

I will not hide it from you: the heavenly race is no short sprint, but a race for life, which calls for all the strength of grace. But that is exactly why it is not won by a swift start in one’s own strength. Whoever comes to know himself as weak and exhausted also learns to cry for patience and endurance from above. So do not give up. It is no shame that you are tired; it is grace that you are still running. And what you need for the next step will be given you.
