Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isaiah 45:22

This invitation, “Look unto Me, and be ye saved,” must be spoken to the heart, so that power comes with the promise. And when power comes with the invitation, the scales fall from the eyes, the veil is taken away from the heart, and strength is given to do what the text invites. They “look unto Him,” though they are at “the ends of the earth,” and as they look they are “lightened: and their faces are not ashamed.” The grace of Jesus shines in the invitation (for He is the speaker here), and when it comes into their conscience they see the King in His beauty and behold the land that is very far off. “Look unto Me,” says the Mediator and Advocate, the Friend of sinners, the Redeemer of the lost!

At His Word they look, and what do they see in Him? In the first place they behold His glorious Person, that Divine mystery wrapped up in the words, “I am God!” And what a great subject this is for meditation! The glorious Person, the Son of God! This is the great mystery of godliness: God manifest in the flesh! And what else does faith see in the glorious Person of Christ but the Mediator, the Intercessor, the High Priest, the Advocate between an angry God and a guilty soul?

But as long as we are not in the feeling of our souls at “the ends of the earth,” we have no eyes to see, no ears to hear and no heart to feel what a glorious Mediator sits at the right hand of the Father. When we are in our experience so far from God, we are brought to see and feel that He Who alone can bring us near must Himself be God. For we know for certain that only an almighty arm can draw us from “the ends of the earth” and bring us near to the Most High. We feel that our own righteousness, our tears, prayers, promises and resolutions cannot bring us to God. And then we come to understand the meaning of the words, “And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father” (Eph. 2:17).

Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22

To the reader…

That word, “Look unto Me,” sounds also for the one who has found that all his tears, prayers, promises and resolutions did not bring him any nearer to God. Are you still standing at the ends of the earth, with a veil over your heart and no strength to do what the invitation asks? Do not be surprised; it is just there that the soul learns that He Who must bring her near must Himself be God. No lesser arm can fetch you from there.

Listen, then, to Who is speaking here. It is the Mediator, the Friend of sinners, the Redeemer of the lost, Who says, “Look unto Me, and be ye saved.” Pray that this word may come with power to your heart, so that the scales fall from your eyes and you see the King in His beauty. Whoever looks to Him in this way is lightened, and his face is not ashamed; for through Him there is access to the Father, even for those who were afar off.
