Hebt de wereld niet lief

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
1 John 2:15-17

Paul says, “I delight in the law of God after the inward man”; yet at the same time he says, “I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me” (Romans 7:22 and 21). The question now is which principle is to have the upper hand. Am I, if I profess the fear of the Lord, to obey God, to listen to His Word and will, to seek and do what pleases Him? Or am I to love what God abhors, and so in fact to range myself in the ranks of the enemies of God and of godliness? It is certain that our love to things determines where our heart and our treasure are. And that holds good both when we apply the rule to judge the whole and when we judge a part.

I hope I do not love the world as wholly as a carnal man, to whom the world is everything. But I may love it partly, though I do not love it wholly; I may love a little of it, though I do not love it in its entirety; I may covet one slice of the cake, though I do not want to have and eat the whole. But so far as I love the world and the things that are in the world, I love God’s enemy. Then I love a state of things directly contrary to the revealed will of God; then I desert my standard and range myself under the enemy’s flag; then I stand in the ranks of those who fight against God and against whom God fights.

And by my love to them I approve of their principles, maxims, pursuits, habits and ways. So in heart, though not in person, I take the side of those who lie under the wrath and condemnation of God.

Therefore God commands me not to love the world. For if I love the world, my heart strays from the right path, easily slips into a ditch, walks in subjection with those who go along the broad road, and, like Ephraim, though armed, turns back when the battle begins. Therefore God makes me hear this warning by His inspired apostle. And O that God the Holy Ghost would communicate light, life and grace to my heart and yours and to all the saints: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.”

Reading: Romans 7:9-25

To the reader…

Do you know that inner conflict of which Paul speaks: a delight in the law of God after the inward man, and yet evil present with you when you would do good? Perhaps you say to yourself, “Surely I do not love the world as wholly as a carnal man.” But be honest before God. A little love to the world is still love to God’s enemy, and a heart that gives way to it easily slips into the ditch and, like Ephraim, turns back when the battle begins.

Do not let this warning make you despondent, but let it drive you out to Him Who alone can communicate light, life and grace. You cannot loosen your heart from the world yourself, but the Holy Ghost can. Plead, then, for that grace, for yourself and for all the saints, so that your love may not remain divided, but your heart and your treasure may be where your God is.
