Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy Name.
Psalm 119:132

The Lord had given David what He gives all His children: eyes, observant eyes. By them he saw that the Lord had a people that loved His Name. In the midst of the ungodly generation among which his lot was cast, there was a scattered people into whom God had shed His love, to whom He revealed grace, and into whose hearts He had let fall something of His lovingkindness, which is better than life.

David looked at them, and in doing so he saw what a blessed people they were. He saw that they were surrounded by all the perfections of God. He saw that they were kept as the apple of God’s eye. He saw them as the excellent of the earth, in whom was all his delight, and tender affection went out of his heart towards them, as beloved of God, who also loved Him Who had shed His love abroad in their souls.

A great many of God’s children are here. Their eyes are enlightened, so that they can see that God has a people. Of that they have no doubt whatever, and more than that: their feelings are secretly and holily wrought upon, so that they feel tender affection going out towards this people. They regard them as the excellent of the earth. They love them because they see the spirit, the likeness and the image of Christ in them, however poor, however mean and however despised they are in the eyes of the world. There is a secret love that the children of God have for one another, and which binds them together with the strongest cords of spiritual union and affection.

Further, David saw that God dealt with these people in a special way, and therefore he cried, “Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy Name” (Ps. 119:132). He saw that the Lord dealt with this people in a special manner, that they were the favoured objects of His eternal love, and that the Lord therefore blessed them without ceasing.

Reading: Psalm 106:1-12

To the reader…

Seeking soul, do you see with enlightened eyes that God has a people? Does your heart go out to those in whom you see something of the image of Christ, however poor and despised they may be in the eyes of the world? But perhaps in all this you feel yourself an outsider: you see how the Lord deals with them, and you fear that you do not belong among them.

Do not let that tender affection for God’s people discourage you, then, but let it drive you to Him. Where does that love come from? It is secretly and holily wrought in you, and it binds you with the strongest cords to those who love His Name. Do as David did, then, and pray with him: “Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy Name.” He Who blesses His people without ceasing will not despise such a prayer.
