De wonderen van Christus

Vandaag

3 min. read

The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me.
Matthew 11:5-6

Who can describe the deafness which man has by nature to every warning, every threatening, every part of God’s Word? This is surely a dreadful part of the fall. But when God the Holy Ghost begins a work of grace in the heart, He purges the ear. So He opens it to receive instruction. He gives the soul a new faculty, whereby God’s truth is received as from God’s own mouth.

Has it not been so with some of you? When in former days you heard the law, its threatenings passed over your head like peals of thunder, without making any impression. When you heard of the love, the blood and the sufferings of Jesus, your soul was not softened, did not melt and was not humbled. Were you not deaf, utterly deaf? Did you experience any divine sensibility in your soul? Had you any tender feeling? Had you any humbling of spirit? Not one.

But when God the Holy Ghost in His mercy takes away the deafness to all the truth of God, then the deaf begin to hear. This is one of the first signs of life in the soul. They hear the threatenings of God’s law, and every threatening echoes like thunder in their heart. They hear, and believe what they hear: that He will judge sinners, that a day is appointed in which to judge the world, and that whoever lives and dies in sin will be swallowed up by a dreadful wave of misery.

When God the Holy Ghost opens their ears, they hear the voice of the Son of God, for He says, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27); and again, “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live” (John 5:25).

Reading: John 5:19-29

To the reader…

Whoever has come to know something of grace remembers how the threatenings of the law once passed over the head like peals of thunder, without anything changing. Do you remember how you heard of the blood and sufferings of Jesus without your heart melting? That was deafness, a dreadful part of our fall, and no one can cure himself of it.

But do you hear differently now? Does a word of God sometimes echo like thunder in your heart, or fall like a gentle comfort into your soul? Then God the Holy Ghost has opened your ear, and that is one of the first signs of life. “My sheep hear My voice,” says the good Shepherd. And if you still feel deaf and unmoved, hold fast to that promise: “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.”
