De gave van Christus

Vandaag

3 min. read

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 1:3-5

Is not Jesus Christ worthy of all glory? Oh, what a glorious plan for saving guilty man, devised in heaven and accomplished on earth! Oh, what a glorious plan of infinite wisdom, in which all the seemingly conflicting attributes of God meet together in the salvation of such wretched, wandering sinners! Oh, glorious way: that mercy and truth meet together in a suffering Immanuel, and peace and righteousness kiss each other over the cross on Calvary; that God is just and yet the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.

And all this that grace might reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord; that sin may be pardoned and the sinner go free, and yet God’s justice not be tarnished, but rather shine forth with double lustre.

Is not the Triune JEHOVAH, then, worthy of all the glory that multitudes of redeemed sinners can give to His holy Name? Can the heart ever have tasted His grace, can the soul ever have seen His glory, that does not join in this triumphant strain, but denies Him the glory of His Name and says: “Glory be to myself; glory be to my own wisdom, my own righteousness and my own exertions”? Is that a note that will be heard in heaven? Will self-sufficiency ever sound its false notes in the heavenly choir?

No. As it was in the temple: “It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord” (2 Chron. 5:13), so it will be in the holy courts, when redeemed souls gather round the throne and cry out: “Glory, glory, glory, for ever and ever, to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost”; and the arches of heaven will ring with the universal “Amen.”

Reading: Revelation 5

To the reader…

Here you are asked who receives the glory in your heart. It is so easy to keep something back quietly for ourselves: a little of our own wisdom, our own righteousness, our own exertion. But would that note be heard in heaven? Would self-sufficiency sound its false notes in the heavenly choir? No, there only the praise of Him Who saved sinners will be heard.

And is He not worthy of that praise? At the cross on Calvary mercy and truth met together and peace and righteousness kissed each other. There God remained just and yet justifies the sinner who believes in Jesus. Can you dwell on that without your heart beginning to sing? Then lay aside your own glory today, and join with the redeemed around the throne: “Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.” To such a song of praise heaven says “Amen.”
