De gave van Christus

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 1:3-5

When, led by the blessed Spirit, we go to the blessed Redeemer, that He may deliver us from this present evil world by the application of His blood and the communication of His love, we go to Him according to the will of God and our Father. That is our heavenly warrant. When we believe in His Name, it is according to the will of God and our Father. When we hope in His mercy, when we love Him fervently with a pure heart, when we cast our souls upon Him, when we distrust our own strength and righteousness and hang wholly upon His, then we act according to the will of God and our Father. Then we obey the commands of the highest wisdom, listen to the voice of the highest grace, and walk in the ways of eternal truth and peace.

That the whole work of Christ, with all its blessed fruits and effects, is “according to the will of God and our Father” casts a blessed and glorious light upon the original gift of the Son by the Father. Seen in this way, it is all one grand, glorious and complete plan of eternal wisdom and love. When we are thus enlightened by the blessed Spirit and renewed in the spirit of our mind, we see that God has devised and carried out a way by which we may be delivered from this present evil world.

Is it an evil world in your eyes? Do you sigh and cry, as it says in Ezekiel, “for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof” (Ezek. 9:4), not only in the evil world without you, but also in the still more evil world within you? There is a way for you to escape from it; a door of hope stands open, in the very midst of the heavens. Grace whispers to you from the throne of heavenly blessedness: “The Son of God gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God.”

Reading: Ezekiel 9

To the reader…

Is it an evil world in your eyes, reader? Do you sigh and cry over the abominations you see around you, and even more over that more evil world in your own heart? Then you are not alone, nor are you without a way out. A door of hope stands open. The Son of God gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, and that according to the will of God and our Father.

Let this encourage you: if, distrusting your own strength, you cast your soul upon Him and hang wholly upon His righteousness, you are doing nothing presumptuous. Then you are acting according to the will of the Father Himself. He devised it so, He gave His Son, and He wills that poor sinners should come to Him. Go, then, led by the blessed Spirit, with your misery to the blessed Redeemer. He will not turn you away.
