By the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:20

Some of God’s children cannot clearly trace in the experience of their souls whether the law has wrought in their conscience. They cannot perhaps put their finger on the precise time, nor distinctly discern its operation in their souls. They do not find in themselves the experience of it such as they read of in books and hear other children of God relate. This tries and exercises their minds: have they known anything of the law working wrath in them? For they know that the law must be known in its spirituality and power, as well as the gospel. The Word of God tries us in various ways as to the operation of the law in a man’s heart. The first is that it “gendereth to bondage”; a second is that “the law worketh wrath” (Romans 4:15); a third is that “by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20).

Can you not trace these effects in your soul? Have you never felt guilt and bondage before the face of God, so that you were shut up in a dark prison from which you could not come out into the liberty of the gospel? So shut up and imprisoned that nothing but the word of the Lord Himself, sealed upon your conscience, could set you free?

Here follows a mark of a prisoner of the Lord, of “a prisoner of hope”: he will not be set free, if I may so speak, with false keys. He will allow no one but the Lord Himself to deliver his soul. All other deliverers he regards as impostors who come to his cell with picklocks. He knows that if he is not set free by the Lord, then, like an escaped prisoner who is caught again, he will have to go back — and then with heavier chains.

Reading: Romans 3:9-31

To the reader…

Here is a word for anyone who cannot put his finger on the time when the law wrought in his conscience, and whose mind is tried by it. Do not ask so much about the hour, then, but about the fruit. Have you never felt guilt and bondage before the face of God, shut up as in a dark prison, so that you could not set yourself free? By the law is the knowledge of sin, and where that knowledge is, the law has done its work.

If you are such a prisoner of hope, do not be afraid of the bonds, but of the false keys. Let no man and no effort of your own help you out of your cell. Wait for the Lord Himself, until He seals His Word upon your conscience. What He unlocks stays open; whoever is set free by Him never has to go back.
