De gave van Christus

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 1:3-5

The Lord Jesus came to deliver us from the world within us, and also from the world without us. Through His dying love and His atoning blood a new heart and a new spirit were to be given us. So we would not always go on pursuing our own ends, nor be always bent on gratifying our vanity, ambition and covetousness. The welfare of the soul ought to be of far deeper importance to us than the welfare of our body, the prosperity of our circumstances or the advancement of our families.

We ought to hate and abhor that selfish spirit which is the very life-blood of a worldly heart. The salvation and sanctification of our souls must be our first concern, and beside that we must, as far as we are able, do good to the bodies and souls of our fellow men.

Therefore our Lord gave Himself for our sins, that He might also deliver us from the spirit of the world. And where is that spirit to be found? In our own heart. We would not need to fear the company and the maxims of the world without us if we did not have so much of the spirit of the world within us. It is just because we carry so much combustible material in our heart that we are rightly afraid of fire.

If I could live in a fireproof house, I would not need to be afraid when my neighbour’s house is in flames. But if my cottage has a thatched roof, I shall certainly tremble when the flames come near my dwelling. So it is in grace. If I were perfectly holy, had no evil heart and knew nothing of sin in the flesh, I would not need to fear contact with the world. But because I carry in my heart a world that is but the counterpart and image of the world without me, I must fear its influence, and as it were the very breath of the world upon me. For once the spirit of the world masters my thoughts and feelings, it will soon set every evil in my heart ablaze.

Reading: 1 Timothy 6:3-21

To the reader…

Where, reader, does the world lie deepest? Not in the street, but in our own heart. There dwells that spirit which always seeks its own ends and wants to gratify vanity, ambition and covetousness. It is like a cottage with a thatched roof: because there is so much combustible material inside, we rightly tremble when the fire comes near.

Do you recognise this? Do you feel how quickly the breath of the world can master your thoughts and feelings? Then do not despair of yourself, but flee to Him Who gave Himself for our sins, precisely to deliver us from the world within us too. Through His dying love and atoning blood He gives a new heart and a new spirit, in which the welfare of the soul comes to weigh more than all earthly prosperity. Pray for that heart, and be watchful, for the spark lies nearer than you think.
