Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.
Hosea 14:2

“Take away all iniquity.” With your mouth you may show much love, while your heart goes after your covetousness (Ezek. 33:31). You may rise in the morning, fall upon your knees and ask the Lord to keep you through the day, to preserve you from the temptation that has entangled you before, or from the assault by which you have fallen. But no sooner have you risen up or left the room than you are as weak, as helpless, as unwatchful and as ready to fall into the temptation as ever, when the devil sets it before you. Now, if this is your case, you cannot speak the words “Take away all our iniquity” with an honest heart.

But suppose you see and feel how dreadful sin is, how vile and abominable, and what a filthy, base, depraved and wicked creature you are for having been caught in this snare, overcome by this temptation or drawn aside into this trap. Suppose you can smite upon your breast and say, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Rom. 7:24), or smite upon your thigh and say, “Woe is me! Was there ever such a one as I, so easily cast down, so easily entangled, so quickly drawn aside; so weak and wicked a creature? Was there ever such a one as I? O, I could tear out my heart that so perplexes me!” He who has been brought to this point by the secret work of God in his heart can say, “Take away all my iniquities.”

He will not say, “Let me keep this or that sin. It is only a little one, is it not? May I not cherish that desire? May I not indulge that pleasure, if I give up everything else? Only let me keep this; O, I cannot part with it.” I tell you, if a man speaks thus, it shows that he has no sincere sense of sin. He has not been made deeply sorry, nor has he been made truly honest before God.

Reading: Hosea 14

To the reader…

These words suit the one who prays in the morning to be kept, and yet falls before the day is half over. Do you know that? How ashamed you stand then, and how weak and helpless you see yourself! Yet that very bitter sense of what sin is, filthy, base and abominable, is a work of God in your heart. He who smites upon his breast and cries, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me?” can pray in sincerity, “Take away all my iniquities.”

Search your heart, then: are you still keeping back some little sin, some desire you will not let go? Be honest before God; He asks for no half prayer. Bring Him not a part, but all, and ask Him to take it all away. If He takes away iniquity and receives you graciously, then you too will render the calves of your lips.
