Gods leiding met Israël in de woestijn

Vandaag

2 min. read

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; He led him about.
Deuteronomy 32:10

In His dealings with His spiritual Israel, the Lord “leads him about.” He leads him into a knowledge of his own corruptions, and suffers the devil to harass him with sore temptations. This is “leading him about.” He is like a stranger in a large city. He is altogether lost, stands looking about him, and at every corner looks up at the names of the streets, but knows not which is north, south, east or west.

And though he has the map in his hand, he gets little or no help from it, until he is so bewildered and confused that at last he stands stock-still and says, “Where am I? I am altogether lost; I know not how I came here or where I am going; I can only stand still and wait till a guide comes.” In this state he goes and asks people the way. One says, “Turn to the right”; another, “Turn to the left.” One says, “Go down this street”; another, “Go down that street,” until at last he is more confused than before.

So the soul is “led about,” until at last it seems as though it had never rightly known or felt anything, and all its religion, like that of poor Job, seems to have fallen into one great heap of confusion. But still it is the Lord Who is leading him all the time. And though He leads him about by such strange ways, by such roundabout paths and into such strange places, it will be found at the end of the journey that He has “in His mercy led forth the people which He hath redeemed,” and “guided them in His strength unto His holy habitation” (Exodus 15:13).

Reading: Isaiah 63

To the reader…

How well you may know the feeling of that stranger in the great city! You look about you and no longer know which is north or south; the map in your hand tells you little, and every adviser points you a different way. You have come to know your own corruptions, temptations harass you, and it sometimes seems as though all your religion has fallen to pieces and you have never rightly known anything.

Yet do not despair because of that confusion. This too is the way by which the Lord leads His Israel about. The winding ways are His, and He is the Guide for Whom you must wait. Stand still, then, and cry to Him. At the end of the journey you will find that He has led you forth in His mercy and guided you in His strength to His holy habitation.
