And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

What is the chief subject of the trials and exercises of God’s children? Is it not the evil heart that they carry within them? Is it not pride, unbelief, infidelity, darkness, temptations, fears and doubts, sins and transgressions, and the many burdens and troubles that they meet at every step? Hindered and burdened by so many inward and outward trials, they seem unable to realise that grace is in them, or that glory awaits them. Their hands hang down and their knees are feeble.

But how suitable to such is “the word of His grace” (Acts 14:3)! Is not grace exactly what they need? Is there not in the heart of the Redeemer a fountain full of grace, ever flowing and overflowing? And does it not flow full and free through “the word of His grace,” which they have in their hearts and in their hands? How else could it come to them than freely? Have they only the grace they work for? Is grace dealt out cautiously, sparingly and stingily, like money out of a miser’s purse?

No. It is God “that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not” (James 1:5), and “the grace of God, and the gift by grace … hath abounded unto many” (Rom. 5:15). Jesus gives as a King, “of his royal bounty,” as Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba.

Be honest with yourself; be honest about what God has given you. Have you never felt Jesus precious to you? Have you never poured out your heart at His feet? Have you never by faith caught a glimpse of His glorious Person? Have you never felt anything of the working of His atoning blood? Never seen how suitable He is? Never felt Him near and dear to your soul? Never tasted that spiritual mindedness which is life and peace?

If you have experienced this, you have “an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.” For how are we sanctified? Is it not by the word of truth? As the Lord said, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” And have you not sometimes felt the word of truth working holy, heavenly feelings and affections in your heart? Is that not sanctification?

Reading: Romans 5:12-21

To the reader…

Weary pilgrim, do your hands hang down and are your knees feeble? Do you see so much of your evil heart, of unbelief, darkness and doubt, that you no longer dare believe there is grace in you? Do you sometimes think that the Lord deals out His grace stingily, like money out of a miser’s purse, and that you must earn it first? He is not like that. He gives to all men liberally and upbraids not; He gives as a King.

Be honest, then, about what He has already given you. Has Jesus never been precious to you? Have you never poured out your heart at His feet, or felt something of the power of His atoning blood? Do not despise such moments, for they are the work of His Word in your heart. That Word still sanctifies, and out of the fountain in the heart of the Redeemer grace still flows full and free to the poor and needy.
