Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

In what a desperate, what a pitiable state should we be if there were no remedy for this misery and sorrow, which has put the earth out of joint and, like a mighty earthquake, has made all its foundations totter (Ps. 82:5). What a hell it would be if there were nothing in the world but sin and sorrow! If we had only to drain the cup of grief to the very dregs for a few short weeks, months or years, to be plunged in the floods of sin, and to go mourning to our grave, only to open our eyes in endless woe!

But oh, look up, you mourning saints, who often go bowed down under worldly cares and sorrows, and far more often and far more heavily under the deep corruptions of your heart. Look up and see that heavenly ray of light which even now seems to shine through this black gloom, this impenetrable darkness, as a sunbeam sometimes in a moment lights up the face of the earth. “Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:78, 79).

Can you not hear, as it were, a voice of God speaking to the guilty sons of men, the same voice which the shepherds heard when the heavenly choir sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”? Can you not see how grace comes forth, as it were, from the heart of God, by the angels? How it speaks as with an angel’s voice to the children of men and tells them that there is a balm for all their sorrows, a remedy for all their maladies? Can you not see the hand that points to the atoning blood and the justifying obedience of the Son of God, and says, “This is the remedy, the only remedy that God has given for all the sin and sorrow that are in the world”?

Reading: Jeremiah 8:4-22

To the reader…

Are you bowed down, dear reader? Not only under the cares and sorrows of this life, but far more heavily under the corruptions of your own heart? Does it sometimes seem as if there were nothing but sin and sorrow, and as if the road led only mourning to the grave? Then this word is for you: look up. Even now a heavenly ray of light shines through the impenetrable darkness.

The dayspring from on high has visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. There is a balm for all your sorrows, a remedy for all your maladies. Do you see the hand that points to the atoning blood and the justifying obedience of the Son of God? There, and nowhere else, is the remedy that God has given. Then say, however poor and sick you are, “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed.”
