Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

I can appeal to your conscience, you who have one. (For there are but very few who have a conscience, but very few who are really exercised in divine things, but very few whom the Lord really teaches by His sanctifying Spirit, Who leads them into a deep insight into divine matters.) I say, you who have a conscience, you whose soul is kept alive by daily exercises, you who know the evil of your heart that is continually welling and springing up, you who are not deceived by having a name to live or by an empty religious profession—I say, you whose soul is thus exercised know that “by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of your spirit.”

Take away all your exercises, your trials, your sorrows, your perplexities and the work of God by means of these things: where then is your religion? It has made itself wings and flown away. But let your spirit be well exercised in the things of God. Let trial come, let the ties of this world be cut asunder, let temptations come with overwhelming weight, let the corruptions of your fallen nature boil up, let your soul sink into difficulties, let eternity open before your eyes, let death come into view, and let your soul be powerfully exercised in divine realities.

Then I can promise you this: you will want that which God alone can give you. In the still hours of the night you will cry to God that He would look down upon you, visit and bless you, speak words of mercy to you, shed abroad His love in your heart, and comfort and settle your perplexed soul.

Reading: Isaiah 38:9-22

To the reader…

Fearful soul, are you sometimes alarmed at what wells and springs up in your heart? Does your soul sink into difficulties, and do you see eternity and death, as it were, opening before your eyes? Then do not think this is a sign that the Lord has forsaken you. Take away all those exercises, and what remains? A religion that grows wings and flies away. But in these things is the life of your spirit.

For it is just in this way that the Lord teaches you to long for what He alone can give. Do you know those still hours of the night, in which you cry to Him that He would look down upon you and visit you? Then keep on crying, “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed.” He Who teaches you to cry like this can speak words of mercy, shed abroad His love in your heart, and comfort and settle your perplexed soul.
