And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

Holiness does not consist in a certain quantity of duties to be performed, prayers to be said, sacraments and rites to be attended, alms to be given, passions to be curbed, garments to be worn, or tears to be shed. A fruit, to be a fruit, must grow upon a tree, be nourished by the sap, ripened by the sun and refreshed by showers: a living product, brought forth by a divine work. Flowers and fruits may be modelled in wax, and so finely that they can scarcely be told from real ones. But they lack fragrance, juice and flavour. So too is human holiness: a modelled, painted, artificial imitation of the camphire with spikenard, the calamus and cinnamon, and the other pleasant fruits that grow in the garden of the Beloved (Song 4:16).

Christ is the Holy One of Israel. The Head of the Church is holy in Himself and from eternity. The members are holy because they are united to that Head. A holy Head cannot have unholy members. Therefore Christ is the sanctification of the Church. She is holy in His holiness, as she is also righteous in His righteousness. This is the root.

From it comes personal, inward sanctification by the renewing work of the Holy Ghost. He gives the new heart and the new spirit. He bestows holy desires, feelings, sighs and enjoyments, and every pleasant fruit. He works repentance and godly sorrow for sin, brokenness of spirit, a tender conscience, faith, hope and love, meekness, submission, humility, godly fear, watchfulness, abhorrence of evil and cleaving to all that is good, and all those outward fruits of righteousness which are to the praise of God.

This is Gospel holiness, holiness as the special gift and the special work of the Holy Ghost, the only true and acceptable holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Those who are thus sanctified have an eternal inheritance, for they are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ.

Reading: John 15:1-17

To the reader…

Have you long been toiling to become holy, and do you see in all your labour no more than wax and paint? Have you performed your duties, said your prayers, curbed your passions, and yet find no fragrance, no juice, no flavour in your soul? Do not despair over that, but learn where true holiness has its root. It does not grow out of your hands, but upon the tree; it is a living fruit, brought forth by a divine work.

Christ is the sanctification of His Church, and a holy Head cannot have unholy members. Look away from yourself, then, to Him. From Him comes the renewing work of the Holy Ghost, Who gives the new heart, works repentance, makes the conscience tender and causes faith, hope and love to blossom. What He works in you is no imitation, but real fruit. And whoever is thus sanctified in Christ has an inheritance that never fades away.
