Die Koning verhore ons

Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.
Psalm 20:9

However painful and distressing it may be, I believe that every God-taught soul must come to know the guilt of sin experimentally and painfully. There is no more wretched feeling than a sense of guilt, when God the Holy Ghost brings it to bear upon the conscience. It breaks to pieces all the strength of creature merit and human righteousness; it makes the soul sink below all human strength and wisdom. It penetrates so deeply into the inmost recesses of the heart that not a single spot is left untouched. Guilt really felt is overwhelming: it bows down the head and breaks the back of everyone who feels it.

But whenever guilt is felt in the conscience, it will make every guilty sinner cry to God to save him, to save him from the guilt of sin. I think everyone who has felt the guilt of sin through the law being applied to his conscience knows that in the end nothing but the blood of Christ can take it away, when it is revealed to his soul by the power of God the Holy Ghost. Sometimes it may seem as if the sense of guilt wears off. It may be deadened; the painful feelings may not be so keen, but it will grow worse again.

And a little thing may call it up: a passing thought, a sudden sense of eternity, the tolling of a bell or the sight of a coffin carried to the grave. Even the least thing that can raise a thought of death brings guilt back into the conscience. So guilt, though it does not always press equally heavily on the conscience, rises up again and again and brings burdens and troubles with it. So it remains until it is taken away by the sprinkled blood, until the remedy goes as deep as the malady, until the healing virtue of the blood of the Son of God is really felt through the power of the Holy Ghost.

When the Church, then, says, “Save, LORD,” she is begging the Lord to give her eyes to see the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary and a heart to embrace it, that she may be made partaker of blessed pardon through the blood of the Lamb.

Reading: Psalm 38

To the reader…

When the guilt of sin presses you down and your conscience is under fire, so that you have no strength of your own merit left and must bow your head, do not think that some strange thing is happening to you. It is the way by which the Lord makes His people know the guilt of sin by experience, and it is that very guilt that makes you cry to Him, “Save, LORD.”

Perhaps the burden seemed deadened for a time, and then a passing thought, a tolling bell or a coffin on its way to the grave brought it all back. Do not let this drive you to despair, but to the only Physician. Nothing but the blood of Christ, applied to the soul by the Holy Ghost, can take this malady away. Beg, then, for eyes that see the sacrifice on Calvary and a heart that embraces it. That King hears us when we call.
