And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 3:23

God commands us to “love one another”. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another” (John 13:34). Can I feel this love of myself? I can pretend that I can. I can do as one did long ago, who went up to his brother with a very brotherly greeting, “Art thou in health, my brother?” (2 Sam. 20:9), only to smite him with a sword under the fifth rib. I can say, “Brother this” and “Sister that”, “how I love you!”, “what affection I feel for you!” If God did not keep me honest, I could play that part of a disguised hypocrite.

But I cannot feel or bring forth true love without the Spirit working a special work upon my soul. He enlarges the heart and makes the soul melt at His footstool. He gives love to Himself, and with that love He gives love to His people, pure affection. It is not feigned, but springs from a sincere desire for their spiritual welfare; it is not a few sanctimonious phrases, but a real feeling of brotherhood; not merely the word “brother”, but brotherly love from the heart.

When He enlarges the heart, we do not want to mingle among our brethren to say “Brother” or “Sister”; we feel them at once in our soul. When we are alone with God, a tender affection flows out of our heart towards them; we embrace them in our soul.

Yes, more than that, we can forgive our enemies when the Lord enlarges our heart. If we can put them in their right place, where we see them as they are, we can forgive them, even though they have been very unkind to us and have treated us basely. I have found that when it pleases the Lord to enlarge the heart, anger, enmity, prejudice, bitterness and malice, those unclean birds, all take flight, and that simplicity, tenderness, humility and love all spring into life in the soul.

Reading: John 13:12-35

To the reader…

Perhaps it is time to ask yourself how it stands with your love to God’s people. It is easy to say “brother” and “sister” and to speak fine words, while the heart remains cold or is even embittered. Be honest before God: how often was your affection more show than truth? And perhaps even now you carry something of anger, prejudice or resentment against someone who has treated you unkindly and basely.

You cannot bring forth that love of yourself. But when the Spirit enlarges the heart and makes the soul melt at His footstool, He gives love to Himself, and with that love, love to His people too. Then those unclean birds take flight, and tenderness, humility and love spring into life in the soul. Pray, then, not first of all for more strength to love, but that He would enlarge your heart; then you can forgive even your enemies.
