Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to Him shall men come.
Isaiah 45:24

God’s children come to Him because He is their only hope, the only refuge for their guilty, sin-laden souls. They come to Him, too, sorely tempted, while they feel the power of sin continually working within them. They come with a sense of an abundance of sin in their carnal mind, of the basest lusts and the vilest corruptions. They come while Satan assails their carnal mind with blasphemies; with all manner of sinful thoughts against God and godliness; with all manner of vile desires; with a heart and mind sometimes full of confusion; with nothing in themselves but misery and wretchedness. But still they come, and when it pleases the Lord to show it to them, they see and feel the suitability, the glory, the purifying, glorifying and creating grace that is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

They feel it: if He will but receive them, look upon their souls and smile, if He will but whisper to them an encouraging word, such as, “Fear not, for I have loved thee,” or, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee” (Isa. 43:1), then in a moment all that is crooked is made straight, and all that is rough becomes a valley. Their hearts rejoice in Him with joy unspeakable and full of glory. They do not come only because necessity compels them, not only with a heavy load of guilt; they come and see in Him unsearchable riches, exactly suited to all their wants. Their eyes are enlightened by the Spirit of God, and they see in Him an inexpressible beauty and suitability, which they cannot describe, but which is nevertheless felt in every corner of their hearts.

They come to Him feeling that He alone can do their souls spiritual good. How do they come? With cries, groans and tears running down their cheeks, and with heart-rending sobs welling up from their bosoms. They come to Him and urgently plead with Him His own promise. They come to Him day and night, as it pleases Him to stir up these supplications in their souls. They come to Him with their eyes fixed upon Him, and all their desire is that He would but be willing to give His smile to their souls, to manifest His presence, to shed abroad His love in their hearts and to assure them that they are His for ever.

Now if you find all this going on in your soul, you have a scriptural evidence that you belong to the seed of Israel, of whom it is said, “In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory” (Isa. 45:25).

Reading: Jeremiah 31:1-17

To the reader…

You who come to the Lord with a heart full of confusion, assailed by thoughts you dare not name to anyone, and who find nothing in yourself but misery and wretchedness: do not think that for this reason you cannot come to Him. This is how God’s children come: with groans and tears, with sin working within them, because He is their only hope and their only refuge.

Keep coming, then, day and night, and plead with Him His own promise. One word from His mouth, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee,” can in a moment make the crooked straight. And do you find this hungering, this crying and this looking for His smile going on in your soul? Then you have a scriptural evidence that you belong to the seed of Israel, which shall be justified in the LORD and shall glory in Him.
