Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

To be saved implies several things. In the first place, it means deliverance from the guilt of sin. With this the souls of God’s children are chiefly exercised at the beginning: the guilt of sin and the troubles and cares it brings, and also the distressing doubts, fears and bondage which always go with a sense of sin lying upon the conscience. When, then, they cry out, “Save me, and I shall be saved,” they are crying to be delivered from the guilt of sin which they feel in their conscience.

There is the filth of sin, which defiles the spirit. When we see what sin is in the light of God’s countenance, we see that it casts a stain upon our conscience and raises a distressing feeling of self-loathing. From this filth of sin, which defiles and pollutes the spirit, we want to be delivered and set free by the almighty power of God. There is also the power of sin: the secret dominion which sin exercises in the heart.

And oh, what a tyrannical dominion sin sometimes exercises in our carnal mind! How soon we are entangled in snares that please the flesh! The Lord, and the Lord alone, can deliver and save us from all these things.

He delivers us from the guilt of sin by sprinkling the conscience with the precious blood of the Lamb. When this is felt in the soul, we are set free from the guilt of sin. He delivers us from the filth of sin by the washing of regeneration, whereby the frame of our mind is renewed and we are plunged into the fountain opened for all sin and uncleanness.

He delivers us from the power of sin by bringing something of His dying love into our heart. Thereby He frees us from our idols and draws out our affections to heavenly things. He breaks our snares to pieces, curbs our lusts, subdues our corruptions and masters the inward depravity of our dreadful fallen nature.

Reading: Psalm 6

To the reader…

Do you recognise this? There is something that distresses and pinches you. Is it the guilt of sin that lies upon your conscience, with all its doubts and fears? Is it the filth of sin, which fills you with self-loathing when you see yourself in the light of God’s countenance? Or is it its power, that tyrannical dominion, by which you are so soon entangled again in snares that please the flesh?

Whatever it is, the Lord, and the Lord alone, can deliver you from it. For each of these maladies He has His own remedy: for the guilt, the precious blood of the Lamb; for the filth, the fountain opened for all sin and uncleanness; and for the power, His dying love, which breaks your idols and snares to pieces. Then cry to Him, “Save me, and I shall be saved.” So all God’s children cry, and He does not leave that cry unanswered.
