Alle dingen ten goede

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.
Romans 8:28

The heart of the promise is “that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28). Every word is full of blessed meaning. What an exalted view we have here of the wisdom, the providence and the power of God! Here are God’s children, surrounded by countless incomprehensible circumstances, travelling along the various paths of life, and all differing widely in position, age, sex and circumstances. Here is the world full of corruption surrounding them; a crafty adversary always bent on deceiving and harassing them; a heart brimful of sin, kept from overflowing only by the mighty power of God!

Look at all our varied circumstances. If we then believe that everything we pass through works together for our spiritual good when we love God, what a view that gives us of the wisdom, grace and power of a wonder-working God! “All things!” Only see! Everything that concerns your body and soul; everything in providence, everything in grace; all that you have passed through, all that you are passing through now, all that you have yet to pass through.

Let every one of you who loves God and fears His Name take all that belongs to him and lay it in the light of this text. There is not a single thing in providence or in grace that concerns one who loves God, but the promise embraces it. All things! All things! “What! Is there then nothing at all, however trifling, however comparatively unimportant, that does not work for my good if I love God?” No, nothing at all. And when we then look at the variety of things that influence us, and believe that they all work together for our good, how must we admire the amazing wisdom and power and government of God!

Reading: Matthew 6:24-34

To the reader…

These two words, “all things,” you may lay beside everything that concerns you: your cares for the body and your conflict in the soul; what you have passed through, what you are passing through now and what still lies before you. Your heart may be brimful of sin and the adversary may give you no rest. Yet there is nothing, however trifling or unimportant, that falls outside this promise.

Is that not something to make you still? You cannot see the whole of your way, but He Who has the wisdom, the grace and the power sees it all. He keeps your heart from overflowing and orders everything for your spiritual good. Do not ask any longer, then, whether this one thing is included too. Whoever loves God and fears His Name may boldly say it after Him: all things, all things work together for good.
