And will give him a white stone.
Revelation 2:17

Every token the Lord has ever given you that you are His child, every promise that has ever come into your heart, every answer to prayer that you have ever received from His lips, every deliverance by His hand that you have ever experienced, is a “white stone.” Every application of truth to your soul with divine colour and glow, every season of revival and refreshing, every sweet revelation, every breaking or softening of the heart, every melting of the spirit at the Saviour’s footstool, is a “white stone.”

Whenever Jesus was precious to your heart, whenever you washed His feet with your tears and wiped them with your hair, whenever you embraced Him in the arms of trust and affection and could say, “Dear Lord, how precious art Thou to my soul!”, that was a “white stone.” The Lord has given you “a white stone” at every visit of His gracious presence, at every communion with His eternal and never-failing love. And what a blessing it is for the child of God to have even one white stone!

Suppose, to return to the custom from which the figure is taken, that there was doubt about a prisoner’s acquittal. Could he not then point to the white stones that lay in the urn? And if he could show them in his hand and say to the judges, “Here are the white stones which you put into the urn; you yourselves acquitted me,” would not the showing of them have cleared him of the charges brought against him? And what a blessing it is for the child of God to have a white stone that he can show before the throne of grace!

Reading: Psalm 103

To the reader…

How often have you already received such a white stone? Think back. Was there a promise that came into your heart, a prayer that was answered, a moment when your heart melted at the Saviour’s footstool and you could say, “Dear Lord, how precious art Thou to my soul”? Perhaps you find only one or two, and are ashamed of how little it is.

Then do not despise them. What a blessing it is to have even one white stone! When the accusation rises up again and you doubt whether you have really been acquitted, you may appear before the throne of grace with that stone in your hand and say, “Lord, this Thou didst give me Thyself.” He will not deny His own work. What He once sealed with His gracious presence remains His testimony.
