Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to Him shall men come.
Isaiah 45:24

Who are the people who come to Him? Are they not the children of the seed of Israel: regenerate men and women, the redeemed of the Lord, into whom the Holy Ghost has breathed new life, and who have been quickened unto God by His special teaching in the conscience? These people belong to the seed of Israel, God’s own blessed, redeemed, regenerate children. Now the Lord solemnly and positively declares, “Even to Him,” that is, to the Lord Jesus Christ, “shall men come.” It does not lie with man himself.

It is God’s solemn decree, His eternal declaration, that all the seed of Israel shall be justified in the Lord and shall glory in Him (Jer. 4:2). God also solemnly and unchangeably declares, “Even to Him shall men come.” Man, then, does not determine it; it is wholly and solely the sovereign decree of God Himself. How does He bring it to pass? By a special work of grace in the heart. How do these people come? Under the leading of the blessed Spirit of God, Who teaches and draws their souls.

How does the blessed Spirit find them? Does He find them willing to come, willing to let go of all that men by nature love and cling to? No! The special work of God Himself in the heart and conscience must make good this solemn declaration, “Even to Him shall men come.” He does this by showing us plainly that we are lost in ourselves. Only when a man feels himself astray and lost in himself will he ever come to Jesus, for He is the Saviour of the lost. Only when we feel ourselves lost is He a Saviour to us.

We feel ourselves lost, confounded by God’s law; all our righteousness has been laid bare as filthy rags, and we see no way of escape from the most dreadful place. When it then pleases the Lord to make the Lord Jesus Christ accessible to us, with His atoning blood, His perfect obedience, His justifying righteousness and His dying love, and to lay all this with some sweetness and power upon the soul, then we come.

Reading: John 6:22-40

To the reader…

There are times when you fear you will never come to Christ, because you find no willingness in yourself and your heart is still attached to so much. Know, then, that the Spirit finds no one willing. The coming does not depend on man, but on the solemn and unchangeable word of God Himself: “Even to Him shall men come.”

And do you feel yourself lost, confounded by God’s law, with all your righteousness as filthy rags before your eyes and no way of escape? Then do not despair, for it is just in this way that the Lord teaches His people to come. He is the Saviour of the lost. Beg Him to lay His blood, His obedience and His dying love with sweetness and power upon your soul. Then you will come, and say of Him, “Surely, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength.”
