Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
Isaiah 48:17

There is a way of walking in the path of providence, and it is the Lord, and the Lord alone, Who can lead us in the way that we should go in temporal things. But how can we know whether it is a way that we should go, or a way that we should not go? Suppose you can set up your business in a better neighbourhood or enlarge it, change your position in life, take a situation, or seize an opportunity that seems favourable to your interests. Well, how can you know whether this is a way you should go, or rather not? What does conscience say?

Is it a right way to go? Am I exposing my soul to temptation by going that way? Shall I sin against God? Shall I be withstanding Him? Shall I commit a known evil? Am I bringing myself into a situation where the temptation will be too strong for me? Shall I thereby cause the Lord to hide His face from me? Am I bringing His chastening hand upon me? Shall I find nothing but briers and thorns?

It may seem a very pleasant way, a very agreeable way to the flesh, just what a worldly man would like, but it may be just such a way as a child of God dares not enter upon. Now if we are willing to be led by God in the way we should go, and do not choose to go our own way, He will see to it that He leads us in the right way. The Lord overthrows all our crooked ways for our profit, even though it causes us regret and grief and we suffer under it. It is mercy that the Lord sets aside all our ways, even though it gives us much pain and sorrow.

But still, how much better, how much wiser and how much safer it is to go in a way that God approves than in a way that God disapproves! How much better to go in a straight way instead of a crooked one, an upright way instead of a doubtful one, and to walk in the fear of God and not after the lusts and desires of our fallen nature. But it is a mercy that, if we are children of God, He will lead us by the way that we should go.

Reading: Psalm 23

To the reader…

Are you standing at a parting of the ways and do not know which road to take? Perhaps a path smiles upon you that is pleasant to the flesh, and yet something gnaws at your conscience. Then ask quietly: Shall I sin against God? Am I exposing my soul to temptation? Will He hide His face from me? Such questions are no burden, but a gracious rein in the hand of Him Who teaches you to profit.

And have you found that the Lord thwarted your own ways, and has that given you pain and sorrow? Know then that He overthrows your crooked ways for your profit. It is mercy when He shuts a door that you yourself so much wanted to see open. Give yourself up to His leading, even though you do not yet understand His way. He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, and He will lead His children by the way that they should go.
