Gods leiding met Israël in de woestijn

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness.
Deuteronomy 32:10

As a general rule, I think, most who know anything of God’s dealings with their souls can point to certain clear and remarkable circumstances by which providence was, as it were, linked on to grace. The one end of the chain may be of iron and the other of gold, but there is a point where the links are joined together, and that is usually the place where the work of grace in the soul begins. Most commonly some marked providence goes before the beginning of the work of grace.

Some striking event, some calamity in the family, some domestic trial, some bodily affliction, or some unusual course of circumstances led to that memorable point when it first pleased the Lord by His Spirit to touch the conscience. Some have reason to thank God for an illness; others for a removal from one place to another; others for a new situation; others for some particular circumstance that led them to read a certain book or to hear a certain minister.

Others again see God’s wonder-working hand in heavy losses or painful reverses in business, circumstances by which they were brought down upon their knees, perhaps lost their worldly goods, or even sank into actual poverty and distress. And all these unusual providences or events are so connected with God’s work upon the soul that, though not grace in themselves, they had the same effect as Ruth’s coming into Canaan, which ended in her marriage with Boaz, or as Matthew’s sitting at the receipt of custom, which led to his being called to become a disciple of the Lord Jesus.

Reading: Ruth 2:1-14

To the reader…

When you look back on an illness, a loss, a trial at home or a setback that brought you to your knees, you may have regarded that day as nothing more than a dark page in your life. But could it not be that just there the iron link was joined to the golden one, and that the Lord found you in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness?

Providence is not grace in itself, but He Who orders all things can make it serve His work in the soul. Just as Ruth came into Canaan and Matthew sat at the receipt of custom without knowing what the Lord had in view, so your hardest road may be the very place where He touches your conscience by His Spirit. Thank Him, then, for the winding ways. He Who found you in the wilderness also knows the way He is leading you.
