Hebt de wereld niet lief

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
1 John 2:15-17

The apostle John sets forth more fully and clearly what is in the world, to give us yet another reason for not loving it. He sums up all that is in the world under three expressive and searching heads: “the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.” All these lusts are condemned as not of the Father, but of the world. God is not here; His Word is not here; His will is not here; His wisdom is not here; His love, goodness, presence and power are none of them here. It is all man, false, fallen, deceived and deceiving man. It is all the product of the maxims, pursuits, pleasure and approval of a world that lieth in wickedness, a world under the dreadful curse and open condemnation of the Almighty.

On which side, then, will you stand? Are you a lover of the world or a beloved of God? What are you? “Well,” some of you may say, “I do not know.” You will not know as long as you halt between two opinions, as long as in your life and conduct you walk hand in hand with the world. But if the life of God and godliness are in your soul, you must feel very wretched in this state of doubt and uncertainty.

Then you must have many bitter thoughts upon your bed; then you must often hang down your head before God, and before His children too, and a dark shadow must pass over your face when stillness and solitude give you time to think and to feel. If godliness and the life of God are in your soul, you cannot pursue the world with love without God pointing it out in your conscience and your feeling His displeasure in your heart. But perhaps you say, “I would gladly be more free from this wretched love of the world, but I cannot deliver myself.” No, and you never will be delivered from it until you fall flat before God and cry to Him to deliver you from it.

But if He hears your prayer and blesses you with something of His love, you would find that, when it came with Divine power into your soul, it accomplished in a moment what you yourself could not do in a hundred years. You would be purged from that wretched love of the world, which is now both your temptation and your burden, by being given a better object of love. For thereby your affections would be set on things above, where Jesus sitteth on the right hand of God.

Reading: Psalm 73

To the reader…

There are times when you yourself do not know on which side you stand. Are you still halting between two opinions, with one eye on the Lord and the other on what the world has to offer? Then be honest: is there no bitter thought upon your bed, no head hanging low before God and before His children, when the stillness forces you to reflect? That unrest is no proof that the life of God is a stranger to you; it may rather be the very sign that He is pointing out in your conscience what you would rather have kept hidden.

Do not try, however, to wrestle yourself free; that you could not do in a hundred years. Fall flat before Him and cry to Him for deliverance. One touch of His love, brought into your soul with Divine power, does in a moment what all your resolutions could not do: it gives you a better object of love. Then your heart is set on things above, where Jesus sits at the right hand of God, and the world passes away with all its lust.
