Mozes’ zegen over Israël

Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD.
Deuteronomy 33:29

In the book of Deuteronomy we meet with Moses once more, at the close of the forty years in the wilderness. He has not only come to full age in years, like a shock of corn ready to be gathered in, but he has also ripened in grace. Under the special influence of the Holy Spirit, Who made his doctrine to drop as the rain and his speech to distil as the dew, he poured out his soul in that glorious language which breathes through every chapter and almost every word of this blessed book. We may well call this book of Deuteronomy the gospel of the Old Testament. If we are blessed with but a measure of his faith, what a glorious view does our text give us of the peculiar privileges and rich favours which belong to the Church of God!

For us, so far as we belong to the spiritual Israel, Moses stood upon the height of Pisgah and surveyed the land which stretched out before his eyes. For us he looked down upon the tents of Israel spread out at his feet, and was inspired by the Holy Spirit to see in Israel after the flesh the Israel after the Spirit (1 Cor. 10:18). By faith he saw the mystical body of Jesus—the Bride, the Lamb’s wife—the Church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. As by faith he surveyed the privileges and blessings bestowed upon the Church of God, he broke forth into the words, “Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help” (Deut. 33:29).

Reading: Deuteronomy 33:22-29

To the reader…

These words of Moses sound out from the height of Pisgah: can you stand there with him and look down upon the people whom the Lord has saved for Himself? Perhaps you feel more like a stranger in the camp than a child of the house, and the privileges of the Church of God seem too high for you to take to yourself. But notice what the ground of her happiness is: not that she is better than others, but that she is a people saved by the Lord. Her blessedness lies not in herself, but in Him Who bought her.

Therefore the poor and needy soul too, who has nothing but her want, may look up to the Shield of Israel’s help. Moses was ripened after forty years in the wilderness; so do not let the way you are now walking drive you to despair. The Spirit Who made his doctrine drop as the rain can also come down as the dew upon your dry heart, until you cry out in wonder, “Who is like unto thee?”
