Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.
Mark 9:24
One to whom God has given faith never loses that faith out of his heart. But for any action whatever, for every active experience, every work or the bringing forth of anything spiritual, it is as powerless as a steam engine while the moving power, the steam, has not been set to work. But when the moving power comes and the steam is raised, the engine begins to work. So it is with faith in the soul. Faith is powerless until it pleases God to breathe upon it and set it in motion.
Then, as He works upon it and the moving power is set going, it begins to act according to its nature and to do the work God has appointed. It is the work of faith to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (“Dost thou believe on the Son of God?” John 9:35), and to believe in Him as our Righteousness, our Mediator, our Redeemer, our Friend, our Lord and our God. We cannot ourselves raise up faith to see and believe that He is all this to us. But when it pleases the Lord to give us faith and to call it forth in our soul by the operations of His Spirit, then faith spreads its wings, lays hold of this precious Redeemer and brings Him into the heart. And this is “the work of faith with power” (2 Thess. 1:11).
There is a promise in the Word that suits your state and circumstances very well. But you feel that you have not the power to lay hold of it. There it stands in God’s Word, very sweet and very suitable, but you cannot touch it. Or if you touch it, you can draw no sweetness, blessedness or comfort from it. But when it pleases the Lord to bring that promise near, to work with divine power upon your soul and so to raise up and call forth living faith in the promise, what is easier than to believe?
I have often said that believing is the hardest and the easiest thing in the world. There is nothing so hard, nothing so impossible as to believe when the Lord does not give faith, does not raise it up and does not call it forth by His almighty power. But when the Lord does so, when He blesses the soul, brings the truth near, applies the promise and lets it sink in with sweetness and savour, then nothing is so easy as believing.
It is then so simple, so sweet, so easy; it costs no effort at all. It seems to come in and flow out without limit, as long as God gives it. And when that is so, it is “the work of faith with power” to receive the promise, to taste its sweetness, to take it warmly into the heart and to believe that God will fulfil it.
Reading: Mark 9:14-29
To the reader…
How often you see a promise standing in the Word that suits your need so well, and yet you cannot touch it! Do you feel like an engine standing still, with faith in the heart indeed, but without power to use it? Do not despair of yourself on that account, and still less of the Lord. He not only gives faith, but He also breathes upon it and sets it in motion when it pleases Him. You cannot raise it up, but He can.
Say, then, with the father in the gospel: “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.” That is not the prayer of a strong soul, but of a poor soul that knows its helplessness. And when He brings the promise near and lets it sink in with sweetness, you will find that believing is then the easiest thing there is. Then faith lays hold of the precious Redeemer as your Righteousness and your Friend, and holds fast that God will fulfil His word.

Señor, creo; ayuda mi incredulidad.
Marcos 9:24
