Gods leiding met Israël in de woestijn

Vandaag

2 min. read

As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: so the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
Deuteronomy 32:11, 12

Here the eagle is said to “take” her young, that is, as we may gather, to the edge of the nest. The young eagles now lying in the nest will one day spread their wings and fly away. But now, when they peep over the edge of their nest and look down the steep face of the rock on which the eagle’s nest is built, they shrink back in terror. But the eagle teaches them to look into the steep precipice, so that they may learn to measure the depth and not be afraid of it.

So the Lord sometimes makes His children look into the abyss of eternity. Now they are still safe in the nest under His wings, but sometimes, in trying moments, as in illness, they shrink back from death and eternity. They recoil from the boundless gulf and creep back into the nest. But the eagle holds them firmly and makes them look, until by her nearness and warmth they gain the courage to look down without fear.

Then she makes them try their strength, and to bear them up in their flight she carries them on her wings, bears them on her back, where they are safe beneath the arch of her outspread wings. So it is in God’s gracious dealings with His Israel. When He has made them look into eternity and they shrink back from the sight, He takes them up on His wings. He gives them some sweet and heart-warming views of their interest in His blood and takes away the fear of death, until He teaches them to fly away and mount up to the heavenly heights.

Reading: Exodus 19:1-9

To the reader…

Do you recognise this? You too have sometimes looked over the edge of the nest and shrunk back. Perhaps in a time of illness, when death and eternity suddenly came so near, and your heart trembled before that boundless gulf. Do not be ashamed of it; so it is with the young eagles, and so it is with many children of God. The Lord sometimes makes them look into that depth, not to terrify them, but to teach them.

For the eagle does not let go of her young. She holds them fast, warms them and bears them on her wings. So the Lord also takes up His trembling children and gives them sweet, heart-warming views of their interest in His blood. There the fear of death is taken away. Do not ask Him first of all to take away the gulf, then, but to bear you on His wings; then one day you will mount up without fear.
