Deliver me from all my transgressions.
Psalm 39:8

It is a mystery, and it will always remain a mystery. The same man who solemnly made his appeal to God, so that he waited only for His smile and the testimonies of His approbation (so that all his hope was centred in Him and all his spiritual affections flowed out to Him and rested in Him), that same man was so powerfully tempted in his soul, so sorely tried in his spirit and so harassed by the ceaseless conflict between nature and grace, that he cried out as a disconsolate sinner at the footstool of mercy, “Deliver me from all my transgressions.” Is it not a blessed encouragement to a poor, sin-burdened soul that this holy man was so exercised?

Suppose you knew only the bright side of David’s character (his holiness, his spirituality, his heavenly-mindedness and his love to God) and not his dark sides: his corruptions, temptations, disquiet and conflicts. Suppose the Holy Ghost had revealed only one part of David’s experience, his blessings and discoveries, and had not recorded the cries and groans of his troubled soul. Would God’s poor, tried and tempted children then have turned to the Psalms as to a breast full of consolation?

But the Spirit of the Lord in His mercy has unfolded both sides of David’s experience: the bright, light colours and the dark shades; the workings of grace and the workings of nature; the deep sinking and the sweet deliverance. He has shown him to us just as he was: not man exalted, but the grace of God in him magnified. We may find his experience in the Psalms and feel the same workings in our own mind.

For this end they were revealed: to be a lasting consolation, a breast of ever-flowing milk for the poor and needy who hunger and thirst after righteousness. So a sweet testimony is raised up in the hearts of God’s children, that they are going in the footsteps of the flock and that their case is the case of God’s children.

Reading: Psalm 32

To the reader…

How you can sometimes be startled at yourself! You who have set your hope on the Lord and wait for His smile, and who are yet so tempted, tried and harassed by the conflict between nature and grace, that you must cry out as a disconsolate sinner, “Deliver me from all my transgressions”? Do not think that this places you outside the flock. The same holy man who set his hope on God cried in just this way.

The Spirit of the Lord has shown us in the Psalms not only David’s light colours, but also his dark shades, the deep sinking and the sweet deliverance. Not to exalt man, but to magnify the grace of God in him. So the Psalms are a breast full of consolation for the poor and needy. If you find yourself there, you are going in the footsteps of the flock, and your case is the case of God’s children.
