Gods leiding met Israël in de woestijn

Vandaag

3 min. read

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him.
Deuteronomy 32:10

It is the Lord Who instructs His Israel. “All thy children shall be taught of the LORD” (Isaiah 54:13). He so instructs us that we often have to see our own folly and yet admire His wisdom; that we take all the shame to ourselves and give Him all the glory. He instructs us in the knowledge of Himself, in His greatness, majesty, holiness and purity. He instructs us in His righteous law, by which sin and the sinner are condemned. And because only in His light do we see light, we thereby come to know the sinfulness, barrenness, hypocrisy, unbelief, unfaithfulness and pride of our hearts.

By these divine lessons He instructs us in true humility, self-loathing and self-abhorrence before His face. And when He has instructed the soul in the secret of its base origin (the fall) and stripped it of self-conceit, He instructs it in the knowledge of His own surprising and so suitable grace, as revealed in the Person of His own dear Son, “Immanuel, God with us.” He instructs the soul in the knowledge of electing love, atoning blood, justifying righteousness and unfailing faithfulness, of infinite compassion and everlasting mercy. And all these lessons are “to profit withal”; when the Lord speaks, they “sink down into the ears”; they drop into the heart and become “spirit and life” to the soul.

We must learn godliness by experience. Godliness can no more be learned from theory than swimming can. A man may stand on the bank, watch another swim and imitate the motions of his hands. But put him into the water, and he soon sinks to the bottom. So it is with godliness. Put a man into the waves of temptation, and he will soon sink, unless He Who teaches the hands to war and the fingers to fight has taught his arms to swim.

We must have our own trials and our own experiences of mercy; our own temptations and our own deliverances; our own visitations and our own consolations; and we must learn every part of the divine life for ourselves. God teaches His children as though each of them were the only scholar in His school, and He takes as much pains with every scholar as though there were not another in the world to take pains with.

Reading: Hosea 11

To the reader…

Today you are pointed to something you may find hard: that the Lord lets you boast so little of yourself. You have had to face your folly, to learn the pride and unbelief of your heart, and to take all the shame upon yourself. But do you know that this is His teaching? He first teaches you what you are, so that afterwards you may learn what He is in His dear Son, Immanuel, God with us.

Godliness is not learned on the bank, by imitating others. That is why He sends you your own temptations and your own deliverances, your own visitations and your own consolations. If your road is heavy now, do not think that He has forgotten you. He teaches you as though you were the only scholar in His school, and He takes these pains to teach you to swim in the waves, where all your own skill would let you sink.
