Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isaiah 45:22

When we are in the feeling of our souls at the ends of the earth, we learn lessons that can be taught us nowhere else. There we learn what it is to be far from God and to long to be brought near. There we learn the exceeding sinfulness of sin and the value of the blood of Christ to purge the conscience. There we are covered with “confusion of face” (Ezra 9:7). There we learn to feel our utter helplessness and our complete inability to bring ourselves near spiritually and experimentally; we feel what it is to wander about in confusion without being able to come to the fountain of light, life and truth, or to feel our souls gain access to God.

To be “at the ends of the earth,” then, is a painful but profitable place, where we learn lessons we could learn nowhere else, and where we come to feel something of the purity of the Lord and of our own defilement before Him. To these poor sinners, these self-condemned wretches, these guilty criminals, whose only hope is the free grace of God, the Lord speaks in the text: “Look unto Me.” They are the only ones who will look, the only ones who need so gracious an invitation. Others can save, comfort and deliver themselves, but these poor outcasts cannot take a step without being drawn by the Lord.

Therefore the Lord takes them by the hand, for in their desperate condition they need the high and outstretched hand of God Himself to draw them out of their deserved ruin. And the more they look at themselves and the worse things appear for them, the more He says, “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”

Reading: Isaiah 45:17-25

To the reader…

Sometimes you feel yourself at the ends of the earth, far from God, covered with confusion of face. Can you not take a step, and does the way to the fountain of light seem closed to you? It is a painful place, and I would not make that pain smaller than it is. But it is also a profitable place, for there you learn the value of the blood of Christ as you would never learn it anywhere else.

And it is to you, self-condemned, whose only hope is God’s free grace, that the Lord speaks: “Look unto Me.” The more you look at yourself, the worse things appear; then look away from yourself. He takes such poor ones by the hand and draws them out of ruin with His own outstretched hand. There is no other: He is God, and there is none else.
