Deliver me from all my transgressions.
Psalm 39:8

When David cried to the Lord to deliver him from all his transgressions, there were three things in particular in connection with sin from which he wished to be delivered. The first is the guilt of sin. Whenever a child of God commits a transgression, there must be guilt. It matters not what he has passed through, what his experience has been, how much he may have felt the atoning blood and pardoning love of the Redeemer: guilt will follow sin as surely as the shadow follows the sun. When a soul then feels that it has committed a transgression against a holy and pure God, it will surely long and cry earnestly to be delivered from the guilt of its transgression.

There is also the filth, the shame and the confusion which sin brings into the conscience. The conscience is defiled by sin, and filth and shame cover the heart. When we cry, then, to be delivered from all our transgressions, we want to be delivered from the filth and the shame, from their pollution and defilement.

Besides this, there is the dominion of sin. How powerfully sin strives for dominion in a man! Comparatively few people know the power of sin. They give way to it and afterwards do not feel it; or their corruptions are not stirred up and their soul is not exercised. But O, what wrestling, sighing and groaning the poor child of God pours out into the heart of his heavenly Father!

To be delivered from all this (the guilt of sin, the filth of sin and the power of sin) David cried to the Lord. And I believe this will find an echo in every heart taught of God. We cannot know the guilt of sin without begging to be cleansed from it; we cannot feel the filth of sin without begging to be purged from it; and we cannot experience the power of sin without begging to be delivered from it.

Reading: Joel 2:21-32

To the reader…

When, after all you have tasted of the atoning blood, you still stumble, did you think you would feel no more guilt? It is not so. Guilt follows sin as surely as the shadow follows the sun. If you feel the burden of a transgression, the filth and shame upon your conscience, and the power of a sin that seeks dominion over you, do not think that you therefore stand outside God’s people.

For it is just a heart taught of God that knows this threefold grief, and it cannot but plead: to be cleansed from the guilt, purged from the filth and delivered from the power of sin. The wrestling, sighing and groaning you pour out is the language of a child at the heart of his heavenly Father. Do not cease, then, but cry with David: “Deliver me from all my transgressions.”
