Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Hebrews 7:25

The blessings which the Lord Jesus gives to His children have more in them than the glory bestowed at the moment. They stretch forward and reach back; they look forward to the eternity to come and spring out of the eternity that is past. By the giving and revealing of them His children are made meet for the inheritance of the saints in light, for these blessings have a sweet, sanctifying influence. So it is said of believers in Jesus that they “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Pet. 1:8), and that they expect to see Him as He is, and every one that hath this hope in Him “purifieth himself, even as He is pure” (1 John 3:3).

Spiritual blessings are not like mere doctrinal opinions, which often leave us as we are: slaves to sin, to self, to the devil and to the world. They have a blessed, sanctifying influence upon the heart. They prepare the soul for glory; they are a foretaste of it, an enjoyment here on earth of the glories of heaven, even before the time.

Therefore their effect is to wean the heart with its affections from the world; to check and crucify a worldly spirit; to mortify pride and covetousness; to make the conscience tender and alive in the fear of God; to make sin exceedingly sinful, the remembrance of it bitter and the indulgence of it dreadful. They stir up a spirit of grace and supplications; they open up the spiritual meaning of the Holy Scriptures; they promote holy meditation; they feed the soul with choice fruits out of the Word of truth; they breathe in the spirit of faith, which animates every gracious movement towards God. In short, they give and maintain that inward holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.

Can earth afford a more blessed sight than a believer on his knees before the throne of grace, looking up to the blessed Lord at the right hand of the Father, while his sympathising High Priest looks down upon him with love in His heart, pity in His eyes and blessings in His hand?

Reading: Philippians 3:17-4:9

To the reader…

How often you still feel yourself a slave to sin, to self and to the world, and find that mere knowledge of doctrine does not set you free from it! That is an honest and painful discovery. But the blessings which the Lord Jesus gives are different: they make sin bitter, the conscience tender and the heart weaned from the world, and they stir up the spirit of prayer and supplication.

Do you go on your knees, then, before the throne of grace, even if it is with few words and many sighs? Remember Who looks down upon you there: a sympathising High Priest, with love in His heart, pity in His eyes and blessings in His hand. He ever lives to make intercession for His own. Look up to Him, then, and expect from His hand what you will never find in yourself.
