Mijn hoop is op U

And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in Thee.
Psalm 39:7

David turns in upon himself. He had looked earnestly around him and seen man at his best state, in his finest form. Then he turns his thoughts to his own soul and calls upon God and his own conscience as witnesses to the truth of what he says: “And now, Lord, what wait I for?” Well, what did he not wait for? One thing he did not wait for was to be highly esteemed by men.

O deep depravity! O wretched delusion! O brood of a deceitful heart, that a man should be bent upon the high opinion of his fellow men, and rest the foundation of his hope on the fickle, wavering opinion of an earthly worm! “No,” says David, “that is not what I wait for.” When he said to the Lord, “What wait I for?”, he did not wait to obtain worldly advantage by his religion. If your religion rests on worldly interests, if the root and core of your profession is to better yourself in gain, honour and power in the world, it is rotten through and through.

He did not wait for his old nature to undergo a thorough change. He did not expect to become holier, more righteous and more godly in himself; he did not expect to be perfectly sanctified, so that he would be free from the being of sin.

Let us now look at the other side of the matter, to see what he did wait for. He waited for the testimony and approbation of God in his own conscience. Is it so that you look for, wait for or pant after the inward testimony of God in your soul? That you turn your eyes from the creature and look solely and wholly to God Himself? Is it so that you thirst for the testimony of God, for His manifested favour, the witness of His Spirit, the smile of His love, the outpourings of the blessing that maketh rich? If so, you can say, “What wait I for, O Lord? Is it Thy smile, Thy approbation, the coming down of Thy grace, mercy and truth into my conscience?”

Reading: Psalm 39

To the reader…

What are you waiting for, reader? Put that question to yourself honestly before the face of the Lord. Are you seeking, even if only in secret, the high opinion of men, or advantage in the world through your religion? Then you are building on the fickle opinion of an earthly worm, and such a foundation will give way. And if you expect your old nature to become holy and sin to cling to you no more, you will come away disappointed.

But is it your desire to receive the testimony of God in your own conscience, His favour, a smile of His love, the coming down of His grace into your soul? Do you turn your eyes from the creature and look to Him alone? Then you may say with David, “My hope is in Thee.” Whoever waits for Him in this way does not wait in vain; such a thirst He Himself has wrought.
