And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

Suppose it were so (God forbid that it should be so for a single moment!) that I had in the first place by my own exertions to bring grace into my heart and so lay the foundation, and that I had by my own exertions to carry on the work and so raise the superstructure: should I not fail, utterly fail?

But what if grace does all, from first to last? If grace wrote the names of God’s children in the Book of life, if grace gave them to Jesus to be redeemed, if grace at the appointed time quickened their souls, if grace revealed the cleansing power of the blood of Christ to their consciences, if grace will carry them safely through all their trials and temptations, will perfect that which concerns them, and must and shall reign through righteousness unto eternal life: how suitable, how exceedingly suitable is this to a poor, guilty sinner who has nothing, and who feels that in himself he has only rags and miserable tatters!

“The word of God’s grace,” in the hand of the Spirit, lays the foundation. “The word of God’s grace” makes Jesus known in the everlasting Gospel and so raises the superstructure. “The word of God’s grace” bears up through the arms of death and so brings forth the headstone. And the arches of heaven shall for ever ring with the praise of the glory of that grace, whereby they were “accepted in the Beloved” (Eph. 1:6).

Every living desire after the Lord, every sense of His grace and glory, every melting affection for His glorious beauty, every receiving of Him into the heart as the Christ of God, every act of faith, hope or love, every breathing of the soul into His bosom: it is a token, more than a token, an unmistakable evidence that God’s grace is present in the heart of a sinner. And if God’s grace is present in the heart of a sinner, he is in Christ and one with Christ. Then “the word of His grace” will build him up more and more and give him ever deeper draughts of his eternal “inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”

Reading: Jude

To the reader…

How often have you tried to lay the foundation yourself and to raise the superstructure yourself, and how utterly have you failed in it! Do you see in yourself nothing but rags and miserable tatters? Then this word is for you. Grace does all, from first to last: it wrote the names in the Book of life, it quickens the dead soul, it reveals the cleansing blood of Christ to the conscience, and it will carry its own safely through all their trials.

Do not despise, then, the small tokens. A living desire after the Lord, a melting affection for Him, a sigh of the soul into His bosom: these are not fruits of your own field, but unmistakable evidences that God’s grace dwells in you. And where that grace is, the soul is one with Christ, and the word of His grace will build it up more and more, until it enjoys its inheritance among all the sanctified in full measure.
