Christus’ opstanding

That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection.
Philippians 3:10

Close communion with Christ rests upon three things: seeing Him by faith, living upon His life, and feeling His manifested presence. But all three depend upon His resurrection and upon knowing its power. As the One risen from the dead the saints see Him; as the One risen from the dead He manifests Himself to them. And when life and feeling arise in their soul through sweet communion with Him, the power of His resurrection is known in them.

The holy humanity of our blessed Lord, viewed by faith, has a blessed effect: it draws the soul to Him. We cannot have communion with the Godhead in itself. Our fallen state and wretched condition as guilty sinners have for ever closed that way. But when by faith we see the pure humanity of our adorable Redeemer, united with His eternal Godhead, we can now draw nearer to God with holy boldness.

The blood of Jesus gives us access within the veil, as the apostle argues: “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which He hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh; and having an High Priest over the house of God; let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water” (Hebrews 10:19-22). And again, “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:14,15).

Reading: 1 Timothy 2

To the reader…

Do you long, dear reader, for close communion with the Lord, yet feel at the same time that as a guilty sinner you have no access to Him? That is true, if you think of the holy God in Himself; our fallen state has closed that way for ever. But there is a new and living way consecrated through the veil, that is to say, His flesh. In the holy humanity of the risen Redeemer, united with His eternal Godhead, God comes to us and we may draw near to Him.

Do not let your weakness hold you back, then. We have a great High Priest, Who can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, because He was in all points tempted, yet without sin. The blood of Jesus gives boldness to enter into the holiest. Draw near, then, with a true heart. He lives, He sees you, and He is willing to reveal Himself to you.
